Where are our honey bees going?
Have you ever swatted a bee away that came near you or feared their sting? Many people do for good reason, but a lot of people take advantage of their role in the food chain.
“Here’s something that might surprise you: One out of every three mouthfuls of food in the American diet is, in some way, a product of honey bee pollination—from fruit to nuts to coffee beans.”
Those “busy bees” like us, put in a full days work and ensure our food stays plentiful and nourished. Bees are disappearing at a rapid rate, this is also known as Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD). In basic terms, this is when the worker bees of a colony disappear and leave behind a queen, and a few nurse bees to care for the little ones.
Where are these bees running off to?
It has been said that many factors effect the bee population…. but some of the main factors are climate change, disease, pesticides, and loss of habitat. There are a few things we as a population can do to support the regrowth of the honey bees such as cutting down on the amount of pesticides we use in our garden and supplies.
Next time you get afraid of the honey bee buzzing by, think about the benefits they have on our food, and the tasty honey they produce!
